Visiting

Seabird breeding colonies are always a noisy affair, and Gronant's Little Terns are no exception. Their constant cheeky chatter and the fragility of their nests make a visit to the colony exceptionally intimate.

Whilst visiting the colony is encouraged, Little Terns are highly susceptible to human disturbance and this can be very damaging to their breeding success, often leading to nest abandonment. Visitors are asked to follow the below guidelines when visiting the colony

  • Maintain a 30m distance from the roped fence - The seaward fence cannot be placed further out due to very strong tides and some nests are outside of this area.
  • Keep dogs on a lead, or as far away from the colony as possible.
  • Try not to stay in one place for longer than 10 minutes, you may be unknowingly causing disturbance.
If you'd like the opportunity to get closer, please have a look at our Volunteering opportunities.

Access
It takes around 15 minutes to walk from the nearest car park to the colony. From the A548, take the turning signposted for 'Lower Gronant/Gronant Dunes/ Presthaven' and there is a large Car Park on the left, (Note: there is no parking available in Presthaven). Walk towards the coast over the bridge, and turn left onto the Prestatyn Cycle path. 100ms down turn right over the river, and follow the path to the lagoon, from here follow the signs for the Little Tern Colony.
